What is an in-hand salary calculator?
An in-hand salary calculator estimates your take-home pay from your CTC after deductions like EPF, professional tax, and income tax (TDS) - so you can compare the new and old tax regimes before accepting an offer. It also splits your CTC into components like basic pay, HRA, and employer EPF, and lets you download the full breakup as an Excel file. Actual take-home depends on your employer's salary structure, so treat this as a close estimate, not your official payslip.
How to use this calculator
Enter your CTC
Your annual cost to company, as mentioned in your offer letter or appraisal letter.
Set your salary structure
Adjust basic salary percentage (typically 40-50% of CTC), HRA percentage, and any bonus included in CTC.
Select your state
Professional tax varies by state. Select your work state for accurate PT deduction. States like Delhi, UP, and Haryana do not levy PT.
Compare regimes
Toggle between new and old tax regimes. If you claim significant deductions under 80C, 80D, and HRA, the old regime may save more.
Key salary components (components of your CTC)
Your CTC (cost to company) is not what you take home. The difference between CTC and in-hand salary comes from statutory deductions (EPF, professional tax, income tax) and employer contributions that don't reach your bank account directly. Every payslip in India breaks your salary into these components — each one affects your take-home differently.
| Component | What it means | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Basic salary | The fixed, core component your other components are calculated from — EPF, gratuity, and (under the old regime) HRA exemption all key off this number. There's no fixed formula for it; it depends on your industry, designation, and company policy. A higher basic means higher retirement contributions but also higher taxable income, so it's a trade-off, not a free win. | 40-50% of CTC |
| House Rent Allowance (HRA) | Paid if you rent your home. Under the old regime, the exempt portion is the least of: actual HRA received, rent paid minus 10% of basic, or 50% of basic (metro cities) / 40% (non-metro). Anything above that, and the full amount if you live in your own house, is taxable. The new regime gives no HRA exemption at all — the whole amount is taxed as income. | 40-50% of basic |
| Leave Travel Allowance (LTA) | Covers domestic travel (fares only, not hotels or food) for you and your family during a holiday. Exempt under Section 10(5) for up to two trips in a four-calendar-year block — old regime only, and only against actual travel with proof submitted to your employer. | Varies, often 8-10% of basic |
| Special allowance | The balancing figure that makes your components add up to your agreed CTC. Fully taxable in both regimes, with no exemptions available — treat it the same as basic pay for tax purposes. | Varies |
| Bonus | A performance or statutory payout, sometimes built into CTC as an annual figure rather than paid monthly. Fully taxable in the year it's paid, regardless of regime. | Varies by company & role |
| Employer EPF | Your employer's 12% contribution to your provident fund, calculated on basic salary. It's counted as part of your CTC on the offer letter but is invested on your behalf, not paid out monthly — so it never shows up in your take-home. | 12% of basic (capped at ₹1,800/month on ₹15,000 basic) |
| Gratuity provision | A future liability some employers provision for upfront in CTC, calculated as 4.81% of basic (the 15/26-days-per-year-of-service formula annualised). You only actually receive it on leaving after 5+ years of service — until then it just reduces your monthly gross on paper. | 4.81% of basic |
| Employee EPF | Your matching 12% contribution, deducted directly from your gross salary every month. Qualifies for the ₹1.5 lakh Section 80C deduction under the old regime (not available under the new regime). | Same as employer EPF |
| Professional tax (PT) | A state government tax on employment, deducted monthly by your employer. Constitutionally capped at ₹2,500/year, but the exact slab and whether it applies at all depends on your work state — Delhi, UP, and Haryana, for instance, don't levy it. | ₹0-₹2,500/year |
| Income tax (TDS) | Deducted monthly as tax deducted at source, based on your annual taxable income, chosen regime, and any investment declarations you've submitted. The single biggest deduction for most mid-to-senior salaries — see the slab tables below for exact rates. | Slab-based (0-30%) |
The in-hand salary formula
In-hand salary = Gross salary − Employee EPF − Professional tax − Income tax (TDS)
Where gross salary = CTC − Employer EPF − Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic, if included in CTC) − Bonus (if included in CTC). ESI applies only if gross salary is below ₹21,000/month.

Frequently asked questions
CTC (cost to company) is the total expense your employer incurs for employing you. It includes components like employer EPF, gratuity, insurance, and bonuses — none of which reach your bank account as monthly salary.
In-hand salary (also called take-home salary or net salary) is what you actually receive after all deductions: employee EPF, professional tax, and income tax (TDS). For most employees, in-hand salary ranges between 65-80% of CTC, depending on the salary structure and tax regime.
There is no universal answer. The new regime works better if you do not claim many deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, etc.) or if your annual income is below ₹12 lakh (effectively tax-free under the new regime due to the Section 87A rebate).
The old regime may be better if your total deductions under 80C, 80D, HRA exemption, home loan interest, and other sections exceed ₹3.75-5 lakh. Use the toggle in this calculator to compare both and decide based on your actual numbers.
Under the new tax regime, salaried individuals and pensioners get a standard deduction of ₹75,000 per year. Under the old regime, the standard deduction remains ₹50,000. This deduction is available automatically — you do not need to provide proof or invest anywhere to claim it.
Both employer and employee contribute 12% of the employee's basic salary to EPF. For most organisations, the contribution is calculated on a maximum basic salary of ₹15,000/month — meaning the maximum monthly EPF contribution is ₹1,800 each from employer and employee. Some companies (especially larger ones or those with higher basic salary structures) contribute on the full basic without this cap.
Of the employer's 12% contribution, 8.33% goes to EPS (Employee Pension Scheme) and 3.67% goes to EPF.
Professional tax is levied in about 21 states and union territories, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Assam, and others. The maximum annual PT allowed under the Constitution is ₹2,500.
States that do not levy professional tax include Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir. If you work in one of these states, your PT deduction is zero.
Yes, for resident individuals under the new regime in FY 2025-26. If your total taxable income (after the ₹75,000 standard deduction) is up to ₹12 lakh, you are eligible for a full rebate under Section 87A of up to ₹60,000. This effectively makes your tax liability zero.
For salaried individuals, this means salary income up to ₹12,75,000 (₹12L + ₹75K standard deduction) is effectively tax-free under the new regime. This rebate does not apply to NRIs or to income taxed at special rates (like capital gains).
This calculator provides a simplified estimate. It does not account for employer ESI contributions (applicable if gross salary is below ₹21,000/month), gratuity (typically included in CTC for employees with 5+ years of service), perquisites, LTA exemption, or surcharge on very high incomes (above ₹50 lakh). For precise payroll calculations, consult your HR team or use greytHR's payroll software which handles all statutory complexities automatically.
You can optimise your in-hand salary by restructuring salary components (discuss with your employer), choosing the tax regime that results in lower tax, maximising eligible deductions under the old regime (if that works out cheaper), ensuring your HRA exemption is correctly computed, and declaring investments and proofs on time so your employer adjusts TDS monthly instead of deducting higher tax upfront.
