Tripura amends Shops and Establishments Act for ease of doing business

The Tripura Government promulgated an Ordinance to amend certain provisions of the Shops and Establishment Act under Sections 2, 16, 17 and 20 for the ease of doing business by unifying the registration of shops and obtaining trade licenses.

The registration for shops and establishments are governed by the respective State’s Shops and Establishment Act and Rules. In parallel, the shop-keepers have to obtain the appropriate trade licenses from their local competent authority through another local state law.

As this cause hurdles to the shop-keepers due to multiple registering processes, the State Government of Tripura, amended the provisions of the Shops and Establishments that enable ease of doing business by unifying the registration processes for shops, establishments and the required trade licenses.

Through this amendment, the Act –

  • Under section 2 (i) removed the definition of registering authority, and substituted the expression registering authority to labour officer;
  • Under section 16 removed the registration provisions of shops and establishment;
  • Under section 17 substituted the expression this Act to this Act and any other law for the time being in force;
  • Under section 20(a) substituted the expression certification of registration to Trade license issued by the competent authority under any law for the time being in force.
